Requests to install

Whoever has the expo computer, please install the following software from Ubuntu repositories:

Vital

• Survex (get it from the Ubuntu repos)-Aaron 19:28, 14 July 2008 (BST)

Frank's offer

• Can we have standard Ubuntu on it this year? From what I saw last year the restrictions on sudoers caused mainly inconvenience - is there a reason for this? Ollie s

• I have a reliable Ubuntu machine that can be borrowed, needs a bigger hard drive but I could sort that. P4/2GbRam It's a desktop so only space for one aditional hard drive. USB though. Would be able to bring it to the rescue/dinner weekend where it could be taken to Cambs and have all required software installed/updated/tested etc.--Frank 20:14, 28 May 2008 (BST)
• Machine now has 500Gb Hard drive and DVD writer, I've done a clean install of HardyHerron and sorted out codecs so it'll play my music...
  • I'll be bringing it with a keyboard or mouse to the training weekend for someone else to transport over there. (I'll be arriving week two).
  • Someone with more knowldge than I then needs to install any additional software and make sure it'll work without tinternet. That means if you need google earth running in wine, or tunnel dripping with survex (dosen't work quite as well) you'll have a bit of time so sort.
  • PS I've got an empty USB2 to PATA/IDE box for an additional hard drive I'll bring that to the training weekend too. --Frank 18:22, 17 June 2008 (BST)

• That sounds good, Frank. We shouldn't need more than one HDD - but having a large one is good to store our sizeable collection of music survey data. Ollie s

Scanner

If I remember correctly, the scanner doesn't work well- we were having to capture surveys with digital cameras which is not ideal. I can't remember if it was just slow or actually didn't work. Do we want to get a new scanner?

• I have a scanner (A4) at home that I could bring. It's a Canon Canoscan LiDE 20, which IIRC works out of the box with Ubuntu. Ollie s

• Are you sure you don't need to install Sane and maybe a canon specific backend? It took me a while to get a canoscan U676 working on my Ubuntu Hairy Hardon Hardy Heron. -Aaron 19:08, 10 July 2008 (BST)

Printer

There is a printer at base camp. Hopefully it has sufficient ink?

Going by my experience of inkjet printers I wouldn't hold out much hope for the print heads not being dried up.Ollie s
