Phones
There are cheap pay as you go phones for sale in Tesco, £13.30 I think the Tesco one is pay as you go on 'Tesco mobile' So that means it might be locked onto the Tesco network? Could we put our Austrian sims in them? Need to talk or an eleven year old, they know these things.
The advantage of new Nokia phones is everyone knows how to text with em. and there’s bound to be a few car chargers about.
I thought about using Ebay to buy a phone but we might have to buy three to get two good ones...
- We should definitely buy new phones. There is no reason not to buy several new, intuitive phones. Having models that no-one knows how to use is an accident waiting to happen in my opinion. Ollie s
- Before we get anything we need to make sure it's unlockable. I've got some free software which unlocks lots of models via IMEI number. Old Nokias are generally easiest. I'd be tempted by the Motorola F3 (£14.97 at tesco) because it has incredible battery life due to "electronic paper" display- I will check if this is unlockable when I get home. However, I don't know if the interface for texting is sufficiently similar to nokia to keep people happy. Andy's got one I think. -Aaron 13:33, 14 May 2008 (BST)
- I'm not convinced by the Motorola F3, Andy did have one in France and they seem a bit idiosyncratic. Phones without cameras generally have good battery life. The modern equivalent of the old nokia 3310 (or whatever they were called) generation, is what I had in mind. Ollie s
- Ok, agreed. I've unlocked before using WorldUnlock. We don't want the cheap one on the tesco site (1208) because unlock codes for it aren't around yet. I think we want a 1110. Let's get [1] to begin with? Kathryn, do we have a way to spend money?

SIM cards
Does anyone know where the Austrian SIMs are and how to top them up?
- As i understand it the phone sims or te account lapses if they are not used in 6-9 months so someone with more than my minimal understanding of Austrian goes into the Phone shop, asks for the phones to be re-enabled and puts some money on the phone. --Frank 13:20, 18 May 2008 (BST)

Callout box
No matter what kind of phone Expo has at topcamp, it's no use if it can't be found quickly in an emergency. In 2007 the phone and callout book were repeatedly re-housed in different places around the bivi, leading to some very frustrating games of 'hunt-the-phone'. A suitable (the right size, waterproof and indestructible) container ought to be chosen before Expo, clearly labelled 'CALLOUT', and then be used for no other purpose.
