Here is a list of responsibilities and hints for the different committee positions

President

The president is responsible for coordinating the committee and making sure things get done. The important events through term are as follows:

  • Committee meetings at the start and end of each term, generally used to ensure trips are being organised for the upcoming term and any other matters are being seen to.
  • Caving meets, get the meets secretary to book huts and permits for 3 or 4 trips a term. Meets in the Michaelmas term should be booked well in advance of the start of term (mid Summer).
  • Freshers fair, CUSU will send an email about booking a stall, we normally get a standard one with no extras. You need to organise a rota for people to man the stall. There is a rolled up poster in the tackle store, you should also take some gear and sign up sheets or laptop.
  • Squash, generally we ask James to book a room in Pembroke for the Tuesday after the Fresher's fair, this needs to be done well in advance (Easter term). At the squash we have a presentation explaining what caving is and what the club gets up to. We also provide beer and nibbles and get people to sign up for the first two novice meets (payment is required to book a space).
  • Pub meets should happen every week in a pub serving good ale.
  • Socials, one or two curries or other more exciting events during each term is good, get a designated social sec to do it.
  • New year meet, get as many people and gear to turn up to Bullpot Farm for the week surrounding new year. It's a blast.
  • The annual dinner occurs towards the end of Lent term and is normally held as a private function in one of the colleges, get a keen fresher to organise it.
  • Ardeche Easter trip, try to get some who speaks French to book the hut before Christmas.
  • Expo, facilitate promotion and organisation of expo. Most of the work will be done by the expo organisers who are likely to include yourself.

If you can get a permit and leader for any of Charterhouse, Upper Flood, Shatter, reservoir hole or St Cuthberts they are worthwhile. Upper Flood is not a suitable trip for novices. Cuthberts is fairly friendly (but can be long if you want) . I don't know charterhouse. Shatter is very pretty but I don't think it is very long. Reservoir hole has the largest chamber in the country (by area).

Worthwhile trips that don't need a leader include :

GB (permit and key) : big and pretty, particularly if you get to bat passage or main chamber, can use devil's elbow (pull through) to make a sort of round trip. I recommend taking 1 srt kit if you want to go to anything beyond the gorge (there is some fabulous ladder rigging) .

Longwood (permit and key) : gets very wet.

Swildons (no permit) : I avoid the sump with novices in winter as someone always gets cold. If you want a harder time go down blue pencil passage on the short round, there is some really nice streamway. Shatter series is worth a look if you want to carry a tackle sack round the short round, don't screw up the siphon in Shatter itself like me and Matt as it gets 'gurgley' .

Tynings Barrow (no permit) is ok for a Sunday but has a scary bold step. Check latest access arrangements as the farmer has died since the old Mendip underground was written.

Eastwater (no permit) can be as hard or as easy as you like. Can be intimidating for complete novices. I think the bold step is horrible.

Anything in fairy cave quarry is good.
